What Is an Impairment Rating?
An impairment rating is a standardized assessment of permanent physical impairment resulting from a workplace injury. Ratings are calculated using the methodology established in the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, the standard reference used in Indiana workers’ compensation cases. The rating is expressed as a whole person impairment percentage and is used to determine the injured worker’s entitlement to permanent partial impairment (PPI) benefits.
When Ratings Are Performed
Impairment ratings are performed when the patient has reached maximum medical improvement (MMI) — the point at which further treatment is not expected to produce significant improvement. Our physicians determine MMI based on clinical examination, treatment response, and functional assessment, then perform the impairment evaluation using the appropriate AMA Guides methodology.
