Trigger Point Injections in Merrillville, Indiana
Trigger point injections treat painful muscle knots (myofascial trigger points) that develop in muscles following motor vehicle accidents, workplace injuries, and other traumatic events. Merrillville Injury Care provides trigger point injections as part of our comprehensive pain management and rehabilitation program.
What Are Trigger Points?
Trigger points are hyperirritable bands of muscle that develop when muscles are injured, strained, or held in tension for prolonged periods. They are extremely common following car accidents (particularly whiplash injuries) and can cause localized muscle pain, referred pain patterns (pain felt in distant areas), headaches, and restricted range of motion. Common locations include the trapezius, levator scapulae, rhomboids, and paraspinal muscles.
The Injection Procedure
During a trigger point injection, a small needle is inserted directly into the trigger point, and a mixture of local anesthetic and corticosteroid is injected to relax the muscle, reduce inflammation, and break the pain cycle. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed in our office. Trigger point injections are often combined with physical therapy to address the underlying muscle dysfunction and prevent recurrence.
