Functional Capacity Evaluations in Merrillville, Indiana

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an objective, standardized assessment of a patient’s physical abilities and limitations in relation to work demands. At Merrillville Injury Care, FCEs are performed by our rehabilitation team to guide return-to-work decisions, impairment ratings, and disability determinations.

What Does an FCE Measure?

An FCE evaluates the patient’s ability to perform specific physical tasks including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, kneeling, climbing, standing, sitting, and walking. The evaluation also assesses grip strength, hand dexterity, balance, and endurance. Results are compared against the physical demands of the patient’s job to determine work capacity and identify specific functional limitations.

When an FCE Is Needed

FCEs are commonly requested by workers’ compensation insurance carriers, attorneys, physicians, and employers to determine return-to-work readiness, establish permanent work restrictions, support impairment rating calculations, provide objective functional data for disability determinations, and resolve disputes about a patient’s physical capabilities. Our FCE reports are thorough, defensible, and formatted for use in workers’ compensation, personal injury, and disability proceedings.
