An Independent Medical Evaluation (IME) is a medical examination performed by a physician who has not been involved in the patient’s treatment, providing an objective assessment of the injury, treatment, and disability. Purpose of an IME
IMEs are requested to provide an objective second opinion on diagnosis, treatment appropriateness and necessity, causation (whether the injury is work-related), maximum medical improvement (MMI) status, impairment rating, work capacity, and future treatment needs. The IME physician reviews all medical records, performs a clinical examination, and produces a detailed report addressing the specific questions posed by the requesting party.
